Friday

As I sit here writing, I am having a hard time deciding what to blog about. I usually have a million ideas swarming in my head and just have to pick one. So today, I guess I will just put the few things that are on my mind.

I am already starting to think about buying Christmas presents! I think it will be easier if we space out all our purchases. So I am keeping my eyes open for ideas and sales. The most fun part will be buying toys for Gus, we are going to have to work hard to not get him too much!

We watched a few of the new sitcoms this week. I have to tell you, I am shocked and appalled by what they put on national stations at 7:30 at night. I know my parents would not have let me watch some of it, probably until I was in college!! It is so sad. I know it is going to be a real challenge protecting Gus from all the nasty and evil stuff out there.

I have started to listen to calming music during day, including some old Christian music I used to listen to. I feel like it brings calmness to our home. I want our home to be a safe place of peace, and sometimes that kind of music helps me relax.

Growing up, I always looked forward to Friday. It meant the weekend was almost here and I wanted it to come as fast as it could. Since my parents homeschooled me, I sometimes would do extra work during the week so I wouldn't have much to do on Friday. In my head, the weekend starts at noon on Friday. This became difficult when I started working and I couldn't just hurry and finish work to go home!

The last few nights have been a little rough with Gus. Our doctor suggested giving him water in the middle of the night instead of a bottle so he would learn he wasn't going to eat and then eventually will just sleep. He does drink some of the water, but he can't fall back to sleep. So he has kept me up quite a bit. I know it will be worth it when he learns to sleep through the night!

I tried a new fish dish last night that Josh requested. He didn't really like it very much. So that recipe will not be on the keep list! Lately I have had a hard time coming up with menus for the week. Since I have started looking at holiday cookbooks, I keep finding desserts I want to try, NOT HELPFUL!

I need to make a batch of baby food, but I would rather sit here and write this because I am tired.

My dog Bear has been very needy this morning. He follows me everywhere I go. Right now he is sitting beside me. Although it is sometimes annoying, it is one of the things I love about him. He needs me, and it is a nice feeling being needed.

I decided to wear one of my new long-sleeved shirts today even though it isn't going to be cold. It is my way of saying, " Fall please come!"

And I think I will wrap up this random post. I will try to have my thoughts more gathered for the next one!

Updates, a Big Boy , and Recipes

This week has been a busy one so today I am going to play catch up!

Monday night since the Dallas Cowboys were playing I decided to make snack food for dinner, and Josh and I could have our own football party. I have been watching the Cowboys my whole life so it was fun to watch them actually win! As for the snacks, I made pigs-in-a-blanket, homemade salsa and guacamole. Then I made some pumpkin bread to have for dessert. I love this salsa! I got the recipe from my friend Amanda. It tastes just like the salsa at Chili's restaurant.

Chili's Salsa
1 can (14 1/2 oz.) tomatoes and green chilies ( Rotel) (I only found 10oz cans and I used that)
1can (14 1/2 oz) whole tomatoes with juice
4 teaspoons of jalapeños ( I cut up I jalapeño)
1/4 cup yellow onion diced
1/2 - 3/4 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp salt
1) Place jalapeños and onions in food processor, process a few seconds
2) Add the rest of the ingredients, mix until well combined but not pureed
3) Place in covered container and chill

Tuesday Gus had his 6 month appointment (it was about 2 weeks late). He weighed 20 lbs 5 oz (90%) 26 1/2 in (75%) and his head was in 95%! He had to get 4 shots which wasn't fun but he did just fine. The doctor also gave us some advise on his eating and sleeping. We are going to start working toward him sleeping though the night without eating and on stretching him to eating every 4 hours.

We got lamps to go with our new bedspread. I put up pictures of it a few week ago. Here are the lamps: So, we redecorated our bedroom for less than $100!

We went to Dillards on Tuesday. I was so excited when I walked past one of the registers because they had one of my favorite things, the Southern Living 2011 Christmas cookbook!! I have bought it the last two years and it always has fun holiday recipes.

My wedding band was Josh's grandmother's. It was a tight fit when we got married. Since I got pregnant with Gus, I haven't been able to get it on. Tuesday I got it stretched so I can wear it now, I am so happy about that :)

Tuesday, two years ago, Josh asked me to be his wife. I had worked that day and he cooked me dinner when I got off work. After dinner we went on a walk like we usually did, and while we were walking he got down on one knee. He had been to my parent's that weekend to ask their permission. We were so happy. I have never regretted saying yes!!

Today I made Josh some soup for lunch and made some cornbread to go with it. I got this recipe from my Nanny Gay. She is one of my grandmother's best friends and is like a grandmother to me. This is sweet cornbread and is what I grew up eating. I tried some cornbread somewhere else once and was shocked, I thought all cornbread was sweet! Anyways, it is easy and delicious. I am already starting to think about making Thanksgiving dinner. Every year my mom would freeze leftover biscuits and cornbread to use for the dressing (stuffing). So, my leftovers today will be used on Thanksgiving. Here is the recipe:

Nanny Gay's Cornbread
1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup milk
1 egg

Melt 1/2 stick of butter in a square glass pan (9x9). I usually put the pan with the butter in it in the oven and it will melt while the oven heats up. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 15-20 minutes until it is starting to brown on the edges and top.
Secrets to making this cornbread- mix it quickly and make sure the oven is already hot. I usually put all the dry ingredient in the bowl and wait til the oven is hot, then mix in the egg and milk.

Gus is getting so close to crawling, I know it will be any day.

I just had to share this because it is cute :)

Weekend Update

We have a very nice but busy weekend. I worked on Saturday until 2, and Gus and Josh enjoyed their morning together at home. We went to church on Sunday morning, and then we had one of our favorite Sunday lunches. Growing up my mom would make it all the time. She got the recipe from one of her friends so we always called it her friend's name. In honor of my mom though, I want to call this recipe Pam's Chicken because my mom always made amazing Sunday lunches.

Pam's Chicken

Ingredients:
Chicken breast (however many you need to feed your family)
Dried beef (this comes in a jar if you have never seen it before)
Bacon
8 oz sour cream
Cream of mushroom soup
Salt
Pepper
Paprika

Line casserole dish with dried beef. Wrap chicken with bacon and place on top of beef. Mix sour cream and soup and pour over chicken. Add salt, pepper and paprika to top. Bake at 275 degrees uncovered for 3 hours.

Before cooking:

After cooking:

This dish is perfect for Sundays because it will be ready when you get home from church. We serve it with rice or mashed potatoes because they taste good with the sauce from the chicken.

We took a few pictures before church:

The dogs had a rough afternoon.... they love each other :)

When we got Gus is his car, we also got another toy. We like this toy because the songs were not annoying and it was a good teaching tool. It has a little piano, it teaches the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, and has lots of cute songs. His favorite part so far of course is the phone.

I got an idea from my friend Kasie to just put two legs on this "table" so that he can play with it now and then when he gets older we will put the other legs on it to make it into a table. You can see how from this picture it leans so Gus can reach it. Gus wanted his arm in this picture...

I had been putting away groceries in the kitchen and walked back to the living room where Gus was playing and got the shock of my day.... He was standing up holding on to this toy!!! Now remember, Gus is 6 months old and isn't crawling yet. I was so scared because I knew he was going to fall and I didn't want him to get hurt. He fell over but was fine. This little guy may walk before he crawls!! He kinda started to do it again and I caught him on the camera.

As I am sitting here writing this, I am thinking how thankful I am to be a stay-at-home mom. I love the calm of being in my house and taking care of our home. I want to never take this gift for granted :)

What I Wear

I am linking up with Kelly's Korner about where I shop for clothes. I usually do my shopping when we have a trip specifically planned for it. I have bought most of my clothes lately when we have been on trips because there aren't many stores close that I like.

Over the last several months I have bought most of my shirts at the Ralph Lauren outlet at outlet malls we have visited. In the summer I wear the short-sleeved crew neck t-shirts and then in the fall and winter I wear the long- sleeved ones. I am also very excited about a sweater/hoodie I got on our last trip. Here is a pic of a few things I bought.

I buy my jeans at Gap. Over the years I have changed which style I wear as Gap changes their jeans ( which is never fun) and as my body has changed after having Gus. Right now I am wearing their curvy and perfect boot cuts. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are a little long for me. I usually try to buy them when they are having a sale too, I never like to pay full price!

This jacket was my uniform for over a year to wear to work! It is Tommy Hilfiger and I got it at Macy's. I did pay full price for it, but I have worn it enough to make up for that. I love to wear it with a t-shirt, long or short sleeved and khaki pants. I even wore it in our engagement pictures!

I do not get very creative with my shoes. I have never been one to wear heels. And now that I am carrying Gus around, I don't want to risk falling! For about two years I have been wearing Sperry Top-Siders. They are starting to make a lot of different styles and I really like them. Here are the pairs I own right now. I wear them when I work too because they are comfortable (except the wedges of course!)

I really like this pair of shoes. They are black patent leather and shiny.

Most days you will find me in Gap jeans, flip-flops, and a polo tshirt. I would really like to branch out but I have a really hard time finding clothes I like. I don't like to spend a lot of money on clothes for me. This Fall I hope to find some dresses or skirts to wear with leggings. I also am looking forward to sweater weather!

Just to note- we have been buying most of Gus's clothes at Target, Carters, and Baby Gap. I also sometimes get him stuff at TJ Maxx.

In summary, I do most of my shopping lately at Gap and the Ralph Lauren outlet. I buy my shoes usually at Dillards.

I am Super Mom!!

Not really, I just feel like saying that sometimes when I accomplish a lot of stuff around the house. This morning I dusted the living room- deep dusting- as in I dusted the baseboards, shutters, etc. I recently started using Pledge Multi-Surface cleaner- lavender fresh. It smells really good and makes me enjoy dusting! Then I mopped the kitchen/living room. I picked up our bathroom and bedroom. And, I made lasagna for lunch for Josh. When I had accomplished all of this, in addition to playing with Gus, I felt like saying to the world- "I am Super Mom!" I realize I am not, but it makes me feel better :)

I don't really have a theme for today, just some random things. I worked all day yesterday and Josh stayed home with Gus. This was the first time Josh had been alone with Josh all day. I am not sure we will be doing it again soon, it was a little rough for them. It isn't that Josh can't take care of Gus, Gus just didn't feel good at all.

I have a lot of shows on the DVR I haven't watched. I rarely turn on the tv during the day anymore. I would rather do things around the house or blog!

It was cooler here today so I got to wear one of my new long-sleeved t-shirts. It is strange that I have 6 Ralph Lauren long-sleeved polo t-shirts, just in different colors?!? Wearing one of them with jeans is pretty much my uniform in the Fall and Winter.

I confess I had a Christmas radio station on Pandora this morning. I was thinking how much anticipation I have for Winter and Christmas. It was always something I looked forward to for months. But what really should I be looking forward to in this life? It should be the coming of my Lord and Savior. There have been times when I had really hard days and I would pray "Come Lord Jesus, Come." But I do not do this everyday. I think I become too comfortable with my life the way it is. I ignore the evil in this world and try to live in the small world I have created. At times I do get reminded of the evil out there, and it just makes me want to protect myself and my family. I need to focus my eyes on Jesus my Savior. I read two verses today that somewhat dealt with this- funny how things work like that. So I am just going to keep on living day-to-day, trying to be Super Mom, and waiting for my Savior to come take me to my real home.

Recipe Review- Southern Living

For those of you who read the magazine Southern Living, I decided to try the cake on the cover of the September issue. The Apple-Cream Cheese Bundt Cake looked delicious and great for Fall flavors. I made it yesterday afternoon, even though I was really busy. I am not going to type out the whole recipe here, but if you would like it just let me know. Here is how it looked when I finished:
I was very excited about how the cake looked when I finished because it looked just like the picture!
This cake had quite a few steps. You had to make a cream cheese filling, apple batter (which included cutting up 3 cups of apple), and then making the praline frosting. And sadly, I was disappointed with how the cake tasted :( The cake was not very moist. I wonder if I cooked it a little too long or the apples weren't cut up small enough. Also, the cream cheese filling did not have much flavor. One thing I thought was interesting is that you put an egg with the cream cheese, and I think this may be why it was more baked. The icing tasted good. Now, my husband said the cake tasted good. The cake did not taste bad, it just was not as good as I expected. So if you were thinking about trying it, don't bother. Find another apple cake recipe!!

We are getting very closed to crawling! This is the trying to crawl position:
Gus acts like he wants to stand up on one leg, and then he rocks back and forth. He usually ends up on he belly and cries. I know it will just be a matter of time before he figures it out!
I had to include a few more pictures of the little man. Isn't Josh's grass nice?!?

Catching up and White Chili

We got away this weekend and visited my grandparents. It had been about a month since they had seen Gus so they were excited to see him! We had a nice time doing some shopping in a bigger city and eating out. It is still hard for me to believe Gus is big enough to sit in a high chair!

Gus enjoyed riding in a car at Josh's parent's house when we visited, so we found one for him to have at home. I never knew how fun it would be to buy toys for your kids. I think we may have been more excited than Gus was. We also got him another new toy that I will put on here another day. The car was a hit.

I had to take lots of pictures, he is so cute riding in it. He sometimes will put his hands on the steering wheel, but most of the time he just holds his arms out. I love this picture.
Note: this car says it is for 18 months and up. Gus has really good balance, and we added an extra belt to hold him in, and he does great!

Gus is easily entertained by his Daddy, and Samson helps:

Josh and I had a really nice date night on Saturday night. At dinner we didn't spend the whole time talking about baby stuff or work. It was a nice change :)

For lunch today I made one of our favorite soups. I got this recipe from my mom, and I am not sure where she got it. It is easy and delicious!!

White Chili

4 chicken breast halves
2 cans (10 oz) chicken broth
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup onion
1 ear corn (I just bought some frozen and used about a cup)
2 cans diced green chilies
2 cans Great Northern Beans
1 t. ground cumin
1/4 t. ground oregano
1/4 t. crushed basil
Salt and Pepper (I don't always add these)
Corn chips, Cheese

Cook chicken in broth with garlic and onions. Remove chicken to cool. Add next 7 ingredients to broth. Chop chicken and put back in soup mix. Simmer 20-30 minutes (longer if you can). To serve, put crushed corn chips in a bowl. (I don't always add the chips) Place soup in bowl, top with cheese (cheddar or Monterrey Jack). Can also garnish with sour cream.

Purses, Perfume, and My Men

Don't you like to just be girly sometimes? Take more than 5 minutes to put on your makeup and fix your hair? There are times when I just need to take a little time to get girly! And I think our husbands appreciate it too :)

I had smelled the new Coach Poppy perfume in several magazines lately, and both me and my husband decided it smelled great. When I got to my aunt's house last week, she had bought it for me as a gift. She had no idea I had been wishing for it. Surprises like that are always so fun.
The bottle is really pretty too :) Wouldn't it be fun to have a scratch-n-sniff on your blog??? Haha! I would let you all smell my new perfume.

I love purses! The first purse I remember having was when I was probably 6, and it was a little fake Louis Vuitton. (Maybe that is why I like expensive purses now!) Since I have been carrying around a diaper bag since Gus was born, I have tried to not look at purses too much. I am very picky anyways, and so I do not just find a purse I like every time I walk into a store. But, I got an email a few weeks ago with a purse that I really liked. I had one similar to it two years ago and loved it. I will not be buying this one anytime soon, but I will keep an eye open just in case I saw it on sale someday :)

I had to put in a few cute pictures of my little man

I also had to share this video of the men in my life :) Gus loves his Daddy so much, he just laughs and smiles at him all the time. I think the lighting made this video a little blurry

Fall is Here!!

59 degrees outside - at 3:45 in the afternoon, a cool breeze and a cloud cover hinting that rain may come- Fall is here!!!!

I have been looking forward to this day all week when I saw the forecast! I pulled out my new long-sleeved t-shirt and put on real shoes instead of flip-flops, so exciting! Fall and Winter really are my favorite seasons.

Today was the perfect day to put out my Fall decor. It isn't a lot, but I love to make the house feel more like Fall. I have the most on my coffee table. Most of the things came from Hobby Lobby, and I bought them at 50% off, so not too expensive either. The flash on my camera made all the imperfections on my table show! One thing I like to decorate with is cinnamon sticks and cinnamon scented pine cones. They look great but also make the house smell like Fall.
I got this centerpiece about 5 years ago at Kirkland's. I still love putting it out! I just added some candles and accents around it to change it up a bit.
I saw a picture using candy corn to decorate and wanted to try it this year. Here is how I used them. I already had the candles and glassware, I just added the candy.

On our trip last week, we went in Pottery Barn just to look. We found a duvet cover that we liked that was 50% off! (it was not super expensive to begin with) We already had a comforter to put in it, so it wouldn't be expensive for us to do a little room make over. We also found a pillow to match that was only $12! In the picture it is the floral one. We got home and found some pillows in the house and this is how it looks:
We already had the other decorative pillows and throw.

This weekend we are going to find some lamp shades that match to replace the purple ones which obviously do not go! It is fun to do a little makeover when it isn't expensive!

Have I ever mentioned that I LOOOOOVVVVEEE Christmas music???? And maybe I listen to it very early in the year? Maybe when I do my Fall decorating ;)
